Part Ⅱ Reading Comprehension

Passage One

When I was growing up in America, I was ashamed of my mother's Chinese Eng?lish. Because of her English, she was often treated unfairly. People in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her.

My mother has realized the limitations of her English as well. When I was fifteen, she would have me call people on the phone to pretend I was she. I was forced to ask for information or even to yell at people who had been rude to her. One time I had to call her stockbroker (股票经纪人).I said in an adolescent voice that was not very convincing, This is Mrs. Tan. " And my mother was standing beside me, whispering loudly, Why he don t send me cheek already two week lone.”

And then, in perfect English I said: "I'm getting rather concerned. You agreed to sent the check two weeks ago, but it hasn't arrived” Then she talked more loudly. “What he want? I come to New York tell him front of his boss. " And so I turned to the stockbroker again, “ I can't tolerate any more excuse. If I don't receive the check ?immediately, I am going to have to speak to your manager when I am in New York next week.

The next week we ended up in New York. While I was sitting there red-faced, my mother, the real Mrs. Tan, was shouting to his boss in her broken English. When I was a teenager, my mother's broken English embarrassed me. But now, I see it differ?ently. To me, my mother s English is perfectly clear, perfectly natural. It is my mother tongue. Her language, as I hear it, is vivid, direct, and full of observation and wis?dom. It was the language that helped shape the way I saw things, expressed ideas, and understood the world.

Passage Two

In the fall of 1985, I was a bright-eyed girl heading off to Howard University, aiming at a legal career and dreaming of sitting on a Supreme Court bench somewhere.Twenty-one years later I am still a bright-eyed dreamer and one with quite a different story to tell.

My grandma, an amazing woman, graduated from college at the age of 65. She was the first in our family to reach that goal. But one year after I started college, she developed cancer. I made the choice to withdraw from college to care for her. It meant that school and my personal dream would have to wait.

Then I got married with another dream: building my family with a combination of adopted and biological children. In 1999, we adopted our first son. To lay eyes on him was fantastic— and very emotional. A year later came our second adopted boy. Then followed son No. 3. In 2003, I gave birth to another boy.

You can imagine how fully occupied I became, raising four boys under the age of8. Our home was a complete zoo—a joyous zoo. Not surprising? I never did make it back to college full-time. But I never gave up on the dream either. I had only one choice: to find a way. That meant taking as few as one class each semester. The hardest part was feeling guilty about the time I spent away from the boys. They often wanted me to stay home with them. There certainly were times I wanted to quit, but I knew I should set an example for them to follow through the rest of their lives.

In 2007, I graduated from the University of North Carolina. I spent a total of 21 years getting my college degree!

I am not special, just single-minded. It always struck me that when you're looking at a big challenge from the outside, it looks huge, but when you're in the midst of it, it just seems normal. Everything you want won t arrive in your life on one day. It s a process. Remember: little steps add up to big dreams.

Passage Three

It was the summer of 1965. DeLuca, then 17, visited Peter Buck, a family friend. Buck asked DeLuca about his plans for the future. "I'm going to college, but I need a way to pay for it," DeLuca recalls saying, “Buck said, 'You should open a sandwich shop.’”

That afternoon, they agreed to be partners. And they set a goal: to open 32 stores in ten years. After doing some research, Buck wrote a check for $ 1,000. DeLuca ren?ted a storefront (店面)in Connecticut, and when they couldn't cover their start-up costs, Buck gave another $ 1,000.

But business didn't go smoothly as they expected. DeLuca says, “After six months, we were doing poorly, but we didn't know how badly, because we didn't have any financial controls. " All he and Buck knew was that their sales were lower than their costs.

DeLuca was managing the store and going to the University of Bridgeport at the same time. Buck was working at his day job as a nuclear physicist in New York. They'd meet Monday evenings and brainstorm ideas for keeping the business running. "We convinced ourselves to open a second store. We figured we could tell the public, 'We are so successful; we are opening a second store. ' " And they did — in the spring of 1966. Still, it was a lot of learning by trial and error.

But the partner’ learn as you go approach turned out to be their greatest strength. Every Friday, DeLuca would drive around and hand-deliver the checks to pay their suppliers“I drove probably two and a half hours and it wasn't necessary, but as a result, the suppliers got to know me very well, and the personal relationships established really helped out." DeLuca says. “

DeLuca ended up founding Subway Sandwich, the multimillion-dollarchain restaurant.

Passage Four

Telephone, television, radio, and the Internet help people communicate with each other. Because of these devices, ideas and news of events spread quickly all over the world. For example, within seconds, people can know the results of an election in an other country. An international football match comes into the homes of everyone with a television set. News of a disaster, such as a flood, can bring help from distant countries. Within hours, help is on the way. Because of modern technology, information travels fast.

How has this speed of communication changed the world? To many people, the world has become smaller. Of course, this does not mean that the world is actually smaller. It means that the world seems smaller. Two hundred years ago, communication between continents took a long time. All news was carried on ships that needed weeks or even months to cross the oceans. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, up to six weeks would be needed for news from Europe to reach America. This time difference influenced people's actions. For example, a few battles in the War of 1812 between England and the United States could have been avoided. A peace agreement had already been signed. Peace was made in England, but the news of peace did not reach America until after six weeks. During the six weeks, the large and serious Battle of New Orleans was fought. Many people lost their lives after the peace treaty (条约) had been signed. They would not have died if the news had come in time. In the past, communication needed much more time than it does now. There is a good reason why the world seemed so much larger than it does today.

76、Thanks to ______, we can get the latest news of events instantly from all over the world.

A.disasters

B.Europe

C.ocean travel

D.modern technology

77、______ would need six weeks a couple of hundred years ago.

A.The War of 1812 between the US and England

B.Agreeing on peace during the War of 1812

C.The Battle of New Orleans that wasn't avoided

D.Ocean travel between Europe and America

78、Some battles in the war between England and America could have been avoided if ______.

A.people had signed the peace agreement sooner

B.the peace agreement had reached America earlier

C.the peace agreement had not been lost on the way

D.people of the two countries had taken some actions

79、What attitude does the writer hold toward the people who died in the War of 1812? ______

A.Curious.

B.Amazed.

C.Sympathetic.

D.Angry.

80、Which of the following can serve as the most appropriate title for this passage?

A.Modern Technology and Communication

B.People Today in the Small World

C.The Unnecessary Peace Treaty

D.People in the Information Age

Part Ⅲ Translation

(共20分)

Directions: In this part, there is one passage in English. Read the passage carefully and translate it into Chinese.

81、Reading doesn't just mean recognizing each word on the page; it means taking in the information, digesting (消化)it and incorporating (吸收)it into oneself just as one digests a sandwich and makes it a part of himself. The goal is to bring the information back to life, not just to treat it as dead facts on paper. Reading and writing cannot be completely separated from each other; in fact, the aim of reading is to express the information you have got from the text. People who can't express an idea after reading a text is just as ineffective as those who haven't read it at all.
